Elderly Proposal.. :)‎

There were these two elderly people living in a Florida old age home. He was a widower and she a widow. They had known one another for a number of years. Now, one evening, there was a community supper in the big activity center. These two were at the same table, across from one another. As the meal went on, he made a few admiring glances at her and finally gathered up his courage to ask her, "Will you marry me?" After some 'careful consideration,' she answered, "Yes, I will." The meal ended and with a few more pleasant exchanges, they went to their respective rooms. Next morning, he was troubled. "Did she say 'yes' or did she say 'no'?" He couldn't remember. Try as he would, he just could not recall. Not even a faint memory. When he tried to see her, he found that she had gone to visit her daughter. With trepidation, he went to the telephone and called her. First, he explained to her that his memory was not as good as it used to

Soy milk vs. cow's milk: Which is better?

Why would I choose soy milk over cow's milk? The main reason to make the switch from cow’s milk to soy milk is if one experiences food allergies or sensitivities. Dairy is the most common food allergy in the United States. This is probably because so many people overeat dairy products. While milk provides some good protein and nutrition, it is really meant only to feed babies. Humans are the only animals that continue to drink milk after infancy and childhood. Commercially available, soy milk is fortified to have nutrient levels similar to cow’s milk. Unlike cow’s milk, it is low in saturated fats and cholesterol. Although the calcium in soy milk is not absorbed as easily as cow’s milk, tests show that calcium levels in people who drink soy milk are maintained even with their lower calcium intake. Children older than one year of age can safely switch from breast milk to soy milk. Unless a baby shows signs of a dairy allergy, soy milk is not recommended as an infant formula. While i

5 Natural Ways To Prevent Depression

Most people have experienced depression. However, if these feelings become more severe or are prolonged-progressing to fatigue, withdrawal from social activities, lack of interest in ordinary pleasures, hopelessness, low self-esteem and decreased productivity-it's usually a sign you should seek help. There are many theories about what causes depression. The dominant theory is that there is an imbalance of neurotransmitters, including serotonin, epinephrine, dopamine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Other theories suggest that depression is a reaction to loss, or that depression is aggression turned inward. Another model suggests that depression results from a habitual pattern of learned helplessness or from decreased or excessive activity in different areas of the brain. Treatments for depressionModern psychiatry focuses on changing brain chemistry through drugs to eliminate depression. Having identified low levels of serotonin as a prime cause of depression, it aims to increase

Natural Tips For Improving Your Memory

Almost everyone would like to improve their memory. Memory is associated with the temporal lobes of the brain. This part of the brain is involved with recognizing and naming objects or faces by comparing what we see to an ideal or pattern we store in our brain. It is known as the “what pathway” because it names what something is. The temporal lobes of the brain are associated with short-term memory and transferring memories to long-term storage. Brief Overview of Brain AnatomyThe temporal lobes of the brain are located behind the eyes and under the temples at the sides of head. In addition to memory, the temporal lobes are involved with language, reading social cues, understanding music and tone of voice, and mood stability. The hippocampus is another part of the brain located closer to the center and next to the temporal lobes. The hippocampus stores new information for several weeks and helps a person learn new skills. It is the first area damaged in Alzheimer’s disease. In front of

Kidney stones: Recommendations for prevention?

Kidney stones form when there are solids in high concentration in the urine. The types of solid elements in the urine contribute to kidney stone formation. The most common type of stone—75-85% of stones—is a calcium salt precipitate. These stones have become more prevalent in people as the modern diet includes less fiber, more highly refined carbohydrates, and high alcohol, animal protein, fat and milk product consumption. Generally, vegetarians have a decreased risk of developing stones, as do meat eaters who also eat adequate amounts of vegetables and fruits every day. People with diets low in magnesium and B6 also show increased stone formation. The calcium level in the blood also affects stone formation and can be influenced by diet. People who eat sugar have higher amounts of urinary calcium. People who eat high-fiber diets have lower amounts of urinary calcium, and greater amounts of magnesium and vitamin B6. Passing a stone is very painful; so once you have passed a kidney stone

Vitamin B12: How much should you take?

Vitamin B12 is a complicated nutrient. Adults need a mere 2.4 micrograms per day. The main food sources are meats and animal products, so strict vegetarians are at risk of deficiency. The B12 in food must be released by stomach acid, and then bound to a substance called intrinsic factor, which enables B12 to be absorbed into the body. Insufficient stomach acid or a lack of intrinsic factor will drastically reduce absorption. May older adults have one or both of these problems. In addition, many common prescription drugs can interfere with absorption, including drugs for ulcers, reflux disease and metformin for diabetes. How can you know if are B12 deficient? The only reliable way is through a lab test ordered by your doctor. If your doctor finds you are deficient and your absorption is compromised, you may need shots of B12. You may also be put on a high dose supplement because the form of B12 in supplements is not dependent on stomach acid for absorption. B12 is found in multivit

Calcium Deficiency: What You Should Know

Calcium is the most abundant mineral found in the human body. The majority (99%) is stored in the bones and teeth; the rest is stored in muscle tissue and blood. In addition to bone building and remodeling, calcium is also responsible for muscle contraction, central nervous function and hormone secretion. The importance of calcium increases with ageCalcium deficiency is of major concern in the United States. An estimated 44-87% of Americans don’t get enough. An easy way to think of calcium and bone health is to imagine the bones as a savings account at a bank. You see, until the ages of 30-35 the body stores calcium in the bones. However, after this time calcium is no longer stored in bones. As a result, when the body tries to remodel bones its only source of calcium is ingested calcium. If you’re not eating enough calcium, the body has nothing to use. Thus, the body cannot remodel the bones, and bone density subsequently decreases. The calcium you consume early in life is deposited in

How To Read Food Labels

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition created standardized food labels to help consumers understand what they are buying. The purpose of standardized labels is to help Americans make better food choices, practice portion control, and to encourage food consumption that reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer. Consumers can also look at food labels and compare them to nutrient claims on the front of packaging. All packaged foods—with the exception of fresh meat, poultry, fish, and fruits and vegetables—must have a food label. As of 2006, the food industry must also list amount of trans fats. Below are things to look at when analyzing a food label. Serving size. Listed at the top of the label the serving size indicates the standard size most appropriate for the package (i.e. cups, pieces, ounces). It is followed by a metric unit measurement. Look at the serving size and ask yourself how much of the food you will actually eat. The calor

Lycopene and Prostate Cancer:

By Tomatoes and other red and pink fruits contain a powerful antioxidant called lycopene. Studies have shown that eating foods rich in lycopene may reduce your risk of developing certain forms of cancer and macular degeneration (eye disease). Lycopene is considered to be an antioxidant. This compound acts as a scavenger to free radical cells (cancer-causing cells). Lycopene neutralizes these types of cells, reducing your risk of developing certain forms of cancer. Lycopene comes from the diet and is stored throughout the body in the colon, liver, lungs, prostate, and skin.

Parrot can be boss

A man goes into a pet shop to buy a parrot. The shop owner points to three identical looking parrots on a perch and says, "the parrot on the left costs 500 dollars". "Why does the parrot cost so much," asks the man.The shop owner says, "well, the parrot knows how to use a computer". The man then asks about the next parrot to be told that this one costs 1,000 dollars because it can do everything the other parrot can do plus it knows how to use the UNIX operating system. Naturally, the increasingly startled man asks about the third parrot to be told that it costs 2,000 dollars. Needless to say this begs the question, "What can it do?" To which the shop owner replies, "to be honest I have never seen it do a thing, but the other two call him boss!"

They were traveling down the road doing between 70 and 80 mph, when a policeman happened to see them. As he pulled them over, he called in to headquarters reporting a speeding limo, with a VIP inside it.The chief asked: "Who is in the limo, the mayor?"The policeman told him: "No, someone more important than the mayor."Then the chief asked "Is it the governor?"The policeman answered: "No, someone more important than the governor."The chief finally asked: "Is it the President?"The policeman answered: "No, someone even more important than the President."This made the chief very angry and he bellowed: "Now who is more important than the President?!"The p

She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head. She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, "Why are some of your hairs white, Mom?" Her mother replied, "Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white." The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, "Momma, how come ALL of grandma's hairs are white?"

How much water do you need a day?

Water is an important structural component of skin cartilage, tissues and organs. For human beings, every part of the body is dependent on water. Our body comprises about 75% water: the brain has 85%, blood is 90%, muscles are 75%, kidney is 82% and bones are 22% water. The functions of our glands and organs will eventually deteriorate if they are not nourished with good, clean water. The average adult loses about 2.5 litres water daily through perspiration, breathing and elimination. Symptoms of the body's deterioration begins to appear when the body loses 5% of its total water volume. In a healthy adult, this is seen as fatigue and general discomfort, whereas for an infant, it can be dehydrating. In an elderly person, a 5% water loss causes the body chemistry to become abnormal, especially if the percentage of electrolytes is overbalanced with sodium. One can usually see symptoms of aging, such as wrinkles, lethargy and even disorientation. Continuous water loss over time will sp

SECRET OF TRUE LOVE

Nice article from Swami Vivekananda on LOVE........ I once had a friend who grew to be very close to me. Once when we were sitting at the edge of a swimming pool, she filled the palm of her hand with some water and held it before me, and said this: "You see this water carefully contained on my hand? It symbolizes Love." This was how I saw it: As long as you keep your hand caringly open and allow it to remain there, it will always be there. However, if you attempt to close your fingers round it and try to posses it, it will spill through the first cracks it finds. This is the greatest mistake that people make when they meet love... they try to posses it, they demand, they expect... Just like the water spilling out of your hand, love will retrieve from you. For love is meant to be free, you cannot change its nature. If there are people you love, allow them to be free beings. Give and don't expect. Advise, but don't order. Ask, but never demand. It might sound simple, bu
